War Grids
A downloadable game for Windows
War Grids
is a strategic autobattler featuring dramatic battles of 1000s of units optimized for your pleasure!
Design decks from a selection of 40 unique units with deep mechanics and details! Every weapon and trait is simulated, and even weapons have their own traits!
Dive deep into tooltips that explain everything hidden under the surface!
Choose from 12 charms to further customize your loadout and make every battle feel special!

Inspirations
War Grids is inspired by autobattlers like the Dominions series by Illwinter and Crystal Clash. With casual, wave-based hands-off combat, you can chillax and watch the battles happen while still holding significant sway by using strategic formations and counterplay.
Once you get more comfortable with the game, try speedrunning different difficulties and presets! Beating the AI will give you a round time, so try to minimize your round time and get a personal best!

Performance
I'm unsure of how larger battles will perform on various devices, but it runs at playable (>30 fps) framerates on my rig, so I think it's optimized enough to finish a round on most devices!
Here's an actual battle that I ran for the trailer. I didn't even bother counting, but it's the single largest battle I ever tested with stable framerates:

Conclusion
This project took 98 hours (timed using pomodoros), over 31 days, making it the largest project I've ever completed to this date.
I hand-drew 197 sprites in Affinity Designer 2, no AI needed! I feel satisfied with how far I've gotten so far with my art style, and I think I'm starting to develop something resembling a workflow or standard for the sprites I draw.
Thanks for checking out the page and I hope this was persuasive enough to try out the game! Follow my itch profile for more games in the future!

i know you said a lot of slowing down with update and stuff, but if you don't mind me asking: you think youcan add the ability to like, use the -/+ to zoom in and zoom out for those who don't have a mousewheels? could also be backported to the other games you done
Hi, will there be more updates? I really like this game.
Hi, unfortunately War Grids will be retired and no longer receive any updates. I'm glad you liked the game though!
I will continue developing whatever comes to mind and whenever I have time for it, so if you are interested in this style, there will be more to come in future projects!
Gotcha, will there ever be any future project that are similar to this? I really enjoy playing it lol.
War Grids is my third autobattler game. My other two are Totally Terrific Battle Prototype and War Shapes.
I definitely have something of an affinity for this genre so there's a pretty good chance there will be something like this again in the future, in a different form.
Latest version. OMG...
WOW! Congrats that's a heck of a commitment lol
Once again thank you for the game. Quite good.
Still, here's my minor complain about the game:
- it's not much like CoE or Dominion
- in CoE or Dominion, every character counts (once dead, that's it), so I will carefully check each stats / effects, arrange the army in calculated formations, buy units according to limited resources, etc, then start the battle and replay to see where went wrong.
- here, I just pump units, that's all, well I mean most of the time... The Charms are quite useful, but I care less on the stats, and so made the game a little lest brain burning on the tactics that CoE or Dominion has, which I prefer.
But don't get me wrong. This game is quite fun. I just prefer more calculative planning that CoE or Dominion provides.
And finally, hope to see more games from you.
By the way, which programming tool did you use for this game? I always admire you guys who created games on your own... I wish I can but I'm very lousy in game programming... Sigh...
On the comparisons I've made to Illwinter's games, I aimed to create something that would play kinda similar to how the combat mechanically functions.
However, without the grand-strategy multi-battle elements, there is definitely a huge gap in how War Grids feels and how Illwinter games feel.
I use Unity 6.1 and C# to create all my games. If you're interested in game development, I highly recommend the youtube channel Brackeys for beginner-friendly tutorials. That's where I got started.
Thanks for the kind words! I'll keep trying to make cool stuff :)
I see... Unity 6.1... OK, noted~
Best wishes to you~ Following you now for new games~
Tried it just now. Impressive, but I think the game is waaaay too long to even tear down enemy's first line of defences...
- Possible to make it shorter game? Somehow?
- Possible to show tooltip on units for stats and charms during gameplay?
- Different terrain types? And I wish units can interact with them...
Thanks for the feedback! I'll be working on an update to improve some of these issues.
